I had a fascinating conversation with someone I met on my travels just the other day. They have a full-time position they like and are really good at. And at the same time, they know they eventually want to do something on their own. In fact, they already have the germ of an idea for what that might be.
And this person had so many good questions about starting out and about standing out.
How do you even attempt to launch a business when there are so many people doing the same thing (or at least something similar)?
How you do stand out in a crowded market?
How do you get clients?
All of my favorite questions… as I’ve grappled with them in my own business and helped clients with them in theirs.
There is only one you.
In response, I shared the following…
I firmly believe that there is only one you with all of your characteristics, experience, expertise, education, interests, passions, and ways of looking at and being in the world. You are your unique flavor of whatever it is you’re doing no matter the business you’re in.
It’s important to remember this. And more than that, you need to lean into it. Use it in how you design and deliver your services and use it in your messaging. Don’t dismiss it. Don’t hide it. It’s the gold.
Aligned timing.
I was thrilled to be a guest on a recent episode of the Raving Coaches podcast. In it, host Laura Hulleman and I went deep on this topic and much more.
Laura knows her audience and it’s coaches. With that said, whether or not you’re a coach, you’ll find information here that helps you think about your offerings, position your business, and revisit your messaging.
Looping back to my fellow traveler’s questions… during my conversation with Laura, I shared this…
There are 55,000 flavors of coaches.
Is this an exaggeration? Likely, but it’s not far off from the truth. And the same holds true regardless of your vertical market. There are many other owners who, at a high level, may be doing what you’re doing, but not in the unique way you’re doing it. It’s just not possible.
If you’re struggling with this.
I have an exercise for you. I created this a few years ago and it’s still relevant and useful.
If you’re stuck not believing that you have a distinctive take on what you do, download the exercise and give it a go. I know you’ll find it helpful.
What makes you unique.
Until next time,
Katherine
