October Resource Roundup 📚
What to read, listen to, and watch, in one place.
I missed sending this email for September (more swimming, sightseeing, and being outdoors, and less watching and reading) but I’m back at it this month. Here’s the next Resource Roundup — the best of what I’ve been listening to, reading, and watching in October.
Have a fabulous weekend.
In case you missed it.
We’re all busy and there’s a lot to read, so…
Here’s a roundup of what I shared on Business/Women on the five Wednesdays in October:
📚 Three books currently on deck.
”The Fraud: A Novel” — by Zadie Smith
”Choosing Wholeness Over Goodness: A Process for Reclaiming Your Full Self” — by Elise Loehnen and Courtney Smith (a workbook to put into practice the learnings from Elise Loehnen’s bestseller, On Our Best Behavior: The Price Women Pay to Be Good).
“Lose Your Mind: The Path to Creative Invincibility” — audiobook narrated by author Josh Pais
📝 Worth reading.
“How to Open a Restaurant in New York” — by Priya Krishna with video by Hiroko Misuike (NYTimes gift link)
“Twenty ways to enjoy winter: Marking the fifth birthday of Wintering” — by Katherine May
“Personal History: Good morning. The things in our lives are the result of fantastic webs of interconnected prerequisites.” — by Melissa Kirsch (NYTimes Saturday Morning Newsletter, gift link)
🎥 Worth watching.
After reading and loving restauranteur Will Guidera’s book, Unreasonable Hospitality: The Remarkable Power of Giving People More Than They Expect, I subscribed to his bi-weekly “Pre-Meal” newsletter. In it he shares his best tips on how to run a restaurant (aka any business). At the moment, he’s the newsletter consists of series of experiences he’s had when it comes to unreasonable hospitality. This week he wrote about an initiative KLM ran back in 2014.
To set it up:
“Back in 2014, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines set up shop in the Amsterdam airport for one week with a mission: search social media for travelers in need, and help them.
They didn’t just help their own customers. They helped everyone.”
It’s worth watching.
p.s. If you’re a fan of The Bear, you will have seen Cousin reading the book and bringing “unreasonable hospitality” to the newly opened restaurant.
🎙️ Four podcast episodes to check out.
🎥 One video to watch.
🎧 Some music lately…
So much good music by so many amazing women…
“Returning to Myself" by Brandi Carlisle — every new album of hers is worth a listen IMHO
“West End Girl” by Lily Allen — apparently the explosive art that comes from a nasty relationship breakdown (her partner was the actor David Harbor)
“Everybody Scream” by Florence + The Machine — same sentiment as for Brandi Carlisle
“I quit (deluxe)” by Haim — expanded edition with three new songs (gotta love when Bon Iver collaborates with fierce female singers)
📷 Four Instagram posts that hit home.
And this from Mark Manson’s Your Next Breakthrough weekly newsletter…
Procrastination is merely the avoidance of unpleasant emotions.
Get comfortable with unpleasant emotions and procrastination takes care of itself.
🍿 Four movies.

“All of You” — a smart, funny, sad (British) take on the romantic comedy — streaming on Apple TV (2025)
“Bad Shabbos” — a witty, light comedy with a stellar cast — streaming on Netflix (2024)
”Coup de Chance” — a darkish dramedy by Woody Allen (if he’s not your cup of tea, I get it) - streaming on Amazon Prime in French with English subtitles (2024)
“The Nature of Love” — another offbeat romantic comedy streaming on Amazon Prime in French with English subtitles (2023)
📺 A few series that I’ve loved.
The drought has ended…
“Task” — streaming on HBO Max (loved this; it’s not an easy watch, but I’ve not seen a drama quite like this… ever)
Season 3 of “The Diplomat” — streaming on Netflix (I’m obsessed; I had to painfully drip the episodes so I didn’t watch them all in one night)
Season 2 of “Nobody Wants This” — streaming on Netflix (I almost gave up after the first episode — it felt tired — but it picked up with Episode 2, and the guest spot by Adam Brody’s wife, Leighton Meester, is worth watching alone)
And I’m in the midst of watching…
Season 4 of “The Morning Show” and Season 5 of “Slow Horses” (both streaming on Apple TV)
And that’s a wrap. Enjoy!
Until next month.
Katherine
